Mother’s Heart (Coração Materno)

“Say what you want, oh my dearest,”
Said the loving peasant to the one he loved.
“For you I will steal, I will kill,
Though you cause me sorrow and pain, my beloved.
I just want to prove I adore you,
And worship your being, and for you I sigh.
So say what you want, I implore you,
For me it won´t matter to kill or to die.”

And she coyly answered this way:
“If you love me as much as you say,
If you´re madly in love, then depart,
Go and bring to me your mother´s heart.”
But believing in what he was told,
He ran fast as a flash down the road.
And his dear became so stupefied
That she fell on the pathway and cried.

The peasant enters the cabin,
In front of the altar his mother he sees;
Then he, the demon, starts stabbing
The breast of the lady, who prayed on her knees.
He cuts out her heart, that´s bleeding,
The heart that he wanted, all other hearts above,
And shouts with a voice full of pleading:
“Victoria! Victoria! Here´s my proof of love.”

He was coming back running again,
When he tumbled and broke one leg then.
And his poor mother´s heart fell and rolled
Away from his hard hands down the road.
So a voice echoed under the sun:
“Are you hurt, oh my poor darling son?
Come embrace me, darling, I´m still here,
Come embrace me, I´m still yours, my dear.”

Disse um campônio à sua amada:
“Minha idolatrada, diga o que quer.
Por ti vou matar, vou roubar,
Embora tristezas me causes, mulher.
Provar quero eu que te quero,
Venero teus olhos, teu porte, teu ser.
Mas diga tua ordem, espero,
Por ti não importa matar ou morrer”.

E ela disse ao campônio, a brincar:
“Se é verdade tua louca paixão,
Parte já e pra mim vai buscar
De tua mãe inteiro o coração”.
E a correr o campônio partiu;
Como um raio na estrada sumiu.
E sua amada qual louca ficou,
A chorar na estrada tombou.

Chega à choupana o campônio;
Encontra a mãezinha ajoelhada a rezar.
Rasga-lhe o peito o demônio,
Tombando a velhinha aos pés do altar.
Tira do peito sangrando
Da velha mãezinha o pobre coração,
E volta a correr proclamando:
“Vitória! Vitória! Tem minha paixão”.

Mas em meio da estrada caiu
E na queda uma perna partiu,
E à distância saltou-lhe da mão
Sobre a terra o pobre coração.
Nesse instante uma voz ecoou:
“Magoou-se, pobre filho meu?
Vem buscar-me, filho, aqui estou,
Vem buscar-me que ainda sou teu!”
